# BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Charles Kingsley was born at Holne Vicarage, Devonshire, in 1819. He was educated at Clifton, Helston Grammar School, King’s College, Cambridge, and graduated from the last with a classical honour in 1842. Ordained curate of Eversley, Hampshire, in 1843; he married in 1844, and later in the same year became rector of Eversley. In 1859 he was appointed professor of modern history at Cambridge, becoming canon of Westminster in the latter year. He died in 1875. His books include: The Saint’s Tragedy (1848); Alton Locke (1850); Yeast (1851); Hypatia (1853); Westward Ho! (1855); The Heroes; or Glaucias; or The Wonders of the Shore (1856); Two Years Ago (1857); Andromeda (1858), a hexameter poem; The Water-Babies (1863); Hereward the Wake (1866); At Last: a Christmas in the West Indies (1871); Town Geology (1872); and Plays and Poems (1873).
