Much has been written about Johan Maurits of Nassau-Siegen. He governed Dutch Brazil from 1637 to 1644, and a great deal has been published about him. He came to Dutch Brazil in 1637 as governor-general and left in 1644. During his time in Brazil he encouraged the arts and sciences, and a great deal was written about him. The present work is a study of the artistic and scientific activities that took place during his governorship. It examines the drawings, paintings, prints, books, manuscripts, maps and other materials produced during this period.
