THE NEW CLARENDON SHAKESPEARE aims primarily at presenting the text of each play in such a way that it can be easily read and understood. The editors have aimed at removing from the reader’s path, more especially to the beginner, difficulties which are constantly overlooked by those familiar with the plays. But the accuracy of examination candidates, even at the university stage, often reveal unexpected ignorance of common Elizabethan words and vocabulary. The notes are therefore not confined to glossing the interpretation of words and phrases, rather than on such important matter as received much space in the old Clarendon did. Short glosses being placed below the text, while the more important passages are reserved for the end. The latter, in the introductions to each scene and in the notes on individual lines, also gives full attention to points of dramatic and historical interest which may be valuable in modern teaching of English literature. Discussion of the text is kept to a few other more difficult passages. An entirely new feature to which this edition of Shakespeare follows the plan set by the Clarendon English series. Here some material notes will be found suitable for more advanced students, but also comprehensive marginal notes material for reflection and comparison. It is opinions will provide material for reflection and comparison. It is opinions will provide material for reflection and comparison. It is opinions will provide material for reflection and comparison. It is material which they can use as a starting-point as well as a model.
