Kingdom without a King

On the morning of 11 December 1688 the Gentlemen of the Bedchamber threw open the doors of the Royal Apartments in order to prepare for the King’s lever. To their utter bewilderment they found the rooms empty. King James had vanished without trace. The news fell like a thunderbolt on an astonished Court and City.
