The Consolation of Philosophy, which became one of the most influential books of the Middle Ages, was composed by Boethius (c. A.D. 480–524) while imprisoned awaiting execution by the Gothic emperor, Theodoric. His last and greatest work embodies “the doctrines of Platonism, Aristotelianism, Stoicism and Neoplatonism.” Christian and his humanist contemporaries valued it highly, and its medieval popularity was such that later centuries could regard the mind of such poets as Dante and Chaucer as having profited by its philosophy.
