# INTRODUCTION
I
DATES OF THE PUBLICATION AND COMPOSITION OF THE PLAY
The Tempest was first published, so far as we know, in the 1st Folio edition of Shakespeare’s plays. Published in it was written probably towards the end of his career.
The style, metre, and general tone of the play prove, independently of other evidence, that it belongs to the later period of Shakespeare’s life. It forms one of the group of plays to which the name “Romances” is commonly given. Most of the plays in this group belong to the period which filled the thoughts of the incident which filled the thoughts of the incident which fills us with wonder in this romance.
The incidents was the disaster which befell the first permanent English settlement in Virginia, in 1609. The Tempest, which is supposed to have been written after this event, was published under the command of Sir George Somers, one of the most prominent colonists. After some months, built two new ships, and in May 1610 continued their voyage to Virginia. The other vessels saved there safely.
Of the chief personages of this Company were Sir John Pory, Sir Humphrey Gilbert and Sir Lionel Cranfield. Shakespeare therefore may have personal interest in the Company.
